“Little Feat” – Possibly The Most Underrated, Groovy, Group!
By | September 28, 2018
The groovy era was a time of outrageous excitement and change. After the first few pop music pioneers broke ground, musicians were feeling the groove and getting on board! Among these groups was the iconic band, Little Feat.
1960s pop music pioneer bands of the counterculture era included icons like The Beatles, The Mamas & the Papas, The Rolling Stones and The Doors, just to name a few.
Pop music groups were cropping up everywhere during this time in history. That is not to say that solo artists weren’t front and center as well. Other artists including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan were also making names for themselves during this time. No matter how you look at it, the '60s and '70s were an exciting era in American music history.
Little Feat is just one of those American rock & roll bands that turned heads back in the day. The group, Little Feat was officially formed in 1969 and was the culmination of the efforts of Lowell George and Bill Payne. George, a singer, songwriter and vocalist and Payne, an accomplished keyboard player, put their efforts together to make a go of it. Sadly, in 1979, Lowell George felt it would be best to disband due to “creative differences.” Unfortunately, not long after that decision, he passed away of a sudden heart attack.
So, how did “Little Feat” become the name of the epic group?
Lowell George was a very talented guitarist.
As crazy as it may sound, the band, Little Feat, got its name for a simple but reason. The name “Little Feat” was decided on because of the size of Lowell George’s feet. Interestingly enough, Jimmy Carl Black, of The Mothers of Invention, happened to make a comment about the size of Lowell George’s feet. Apparently, they were small for a man of his age and size. The word “feet” was changed to “feat” just like the iconic group, The Beatles, derived their name from the word, “beetle.”
Prior to forming Little Feat, Lowell George was a part of Frank Zappa’s band, The Mothers of Invention.
After Lowell’s death, the remaining Little Feat band members decided to regroup and started up again. Over the years, Little Feat’s lineup has changed and so has their style. The band is still carrying on today, off an on, but we will take what we can get!
Regular fans weren’t the only ones who liked Little Feat. In a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, iconic guitarist, Jimmy Page, said that Little Feat was his favorite band!
Little Feat has definitely released a lot of awesome tunes over the years. Throughout the history of the band, they have undergone so many changes that they never really gained any proper, solid footing. Momentum is gained on a constant and regular course. That being said, Little Feat never really solidified their footing before moving on to the next act. Over the years, the names and faces have changed but nevertheless, they are still true to their roots and continue to entertain fans!
