Thinking back to simpler days is comforting. The majority of the new 'pop icons' of today are pretty lackluster when compared to those of yesterday. The cultural innovations were plentiful, everything was forming, whereas nowadays it’s all been done and the waters of creativity have been stagnant in mainstream media for quite some time now.

Before and during the groovy era we didn’t have to look far to find those with raw talent, fresh ideas, and the courage to push boundaries or stand up for what they believed in. Come take a look at some of the most fascinating people in popular culture history.

Pictured here is child actress, Hayley Catherine Rose Vivien Mills, or as she’s known professionally, Hayley Mills along with her big sister Juliet Mills. Early in her career, young Hayley was hailed as a promising newcomer, won the Academy Juvenile Award for Disney's Pollyanna (1960). She appeared in six films for Disney, including her infamous dual role as twins Susan and Sharon in The Parent Trap (1961). She received the Disney Legend Award and then went on to more mature roles in the late 60s.

Juliet Maryon Mills, also an actress also got her start in the business as a child. Before progressing to film and television work, she was nominated for a Tony Award for her stage performance in Five Finger Exercise in 1960.

Pictured here is actress and singer Cybill Shepherd who became a fashion icon after being named “Miss Teenage Memphis” during the Memphis Model of the Year contest back in 1966. She won Model of the Year in 1968 and officially launched her career at 18 years-old Cybill Shepherd. She went on to become a spokesperson for L’Oreal and graced the covers of many popular magazines.

The American model and singer, turned actress, landed some of her better-known roles throughout the 1970s. In 1971 she was cast as Jacy in The Last Picture Show, she played Kelly in The Heartbreak Kid in 1972 and then she got the role of Betsy in Taxi Driver in 1976. From there her popularity continued to bloom, she spent a chunk of the 1980s as Maddie Hayes in the popular show Moonlighting, before landing her own show Cybill which ran from 1995–1998.
