It is no secret that Elvis Presley gained unrivaled notoriety and fame during his epic music and acting career. His striking good looks, talent and charm were intriguing; sending countless women over the proverbial edge. At the height of his stardom, many a woman may have agreed to sell her soul for a chance to be with Elvis Presley, in the Biblical sense. He seemed to be well-known for being a ladies’ man, which was to be expected of someone with his celebrity status. What people didn’t know was that Elvis may have just been a little more complicated than that. Women that dated Elvis and those who knew him best, often recounted a somewhat different account of his sex life.
Elvis reportedly had a very close relationship with his mother, Gladys, until the day she died. In fact, some would say that it was borderline unhealthy. He was said to have slept in the same bed with her until he was a teenager. Although, the sleeping arrangements were dictated by necessity because they couldn’t afford another bed, it would be unrealistic to think that it didn’t play a part in his sexual evolution. After all, a boy’s mother is the first woman in his life.
Although Elvis was always assumed to be at the ready to get any woman into his bed, that wasn’t necessarily the case. Elvis was said to have felt inadequacies in the bedroom department and chose to keep company with young, inexperienced, teenage girls rather than with woman his own age or older. The relationship with his mother was thought to have gotten in the way; keeping him from performing sexually as if he felt it was a betrayal to her. Elvis’ biographer, Alanna Nash, stated that the icon was overly attached to his mother and could not relate normally to mature women. The poor guy just couldn’t get his mother out of his head!
Elvis had a propensity for the younger, less experienced girls whom he referred to as, “jail bait.” He liked their innocence and often enjoyed them wearing clean, white panties in his bed, being a sign of purity; although it usually ended there. He could have taken advantage of any one of them but, instead, chose to have more innocent interactions with them like pajama parties, pillow fights and “girl talk.” These relationships mimicked what he had shared with his mother. He actually felt inadequate, sexually, and was uncomfortable with women his own age. He usually broke off these relationships when the girls reached their late teens; presumably before his perceived inadequacies were discovered!
While Elvis Presley did his best to avoid serious relationships with women, he was known to have dated plenty. Natalie Wood, Ann-Margaret and Cybill Shepherd being some of his more notable acquaintances. Gladys, his mother, only ever approved of one of his girlfriends and he was well-aware of her feelings. Elvis’ relationships never lasted long because of this realization.
When Elvis was 24 years old, he met, and set his sights on, the young and beautiful, Priscilla Ann Beaulieu, who was only 14 years old! Keeping true to himself and what he was comfortable with, he was immediately interested in her. Priscilla’s parents were not exactly thrilled about the idea of their young, precious daughter being associated with the celebrity Casanova but ultimately relented. Before long, Elvis and Priscilla were an item.
Priscilla proved to be Elvis’ one and only wife. She may have been the only woman besides his mother that really “got” him. She described Elvis as being “very passionate but not overtly sexual.” She reported that they did not have sexual relations until their wedding night. Just 9 months later, Elvis’ only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was born. Following this blessed event, and not being able to deal with Elvis’ distancing himself from their life together, Priscilla subsequently left Elvis for another man. This left him feeling inadequate and less than a man. Being celebrated as universal sex symbol, Elvis’ ego had been damaged beyond repair and he never remarried. Despite his heartache, Elvis and Priscilla maintained a close friendship until the end. As often as Elvis Presley was in the spotlight, we really never knew him.
