It was her intriguing Southern Gothic narrative "Ode to Billie Joe" back in 1967 that shot her up to international stardom. The song spent four weeks as the No. 1 pop song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, was fourth in the Billboard year-end chart, and earned her Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance!
Gentry went on to chart eleven singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and four singles on the United Kingdom Top 40, but by the late 70’s she lost all interest in performing.
